After taking a cab driver's mysterious advice, a young lady called Aomame starts to discover strange anomalies in her surroundings. She discovers she has reached a parallel reality that she refers to as 1Q84, saying "Q is for 'question mark.' A world that bears a question." Tengo, an aspiring author, accepts a dubious ghostwriting assignment in the meantime. He becomes so engrossed in the book and its eccentric creator that his formerly peaceful life quickly starts to fall apart.
