Tokyo is the setting and the year is 1984.

After taking a cab driver's mysterious advice, a young lady called Aomame starts to discover strange anomalies in her surroundings. She discovers she has reached a parallel reality that she refers to as 1Q84, saying "Q is for 'question mark.' A world that bears a question." Tengo, an aspiring author, accepts a dubious ghostwriting assignment in the meantime. He becomes so engrossed in the book and its eccentric creator that his formerly peaceful life quickly starts to fall apart.

Over the course of this one year, as the stories of Aomame and Tengo increasingly overlap, we discover the intricate and deep ties that unite them: A mysterious religious cult that started a shootout with the metropolitan police; a wealthy, reclusive dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a mild-mannered but ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector. A beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision.

1Q84 is Haruki Murakami's most ambitious book to date. It is a dystopia that rivals George Orwell's, a mystery, a fantasy, a love tale, and a dystopia that is an immediate best seller in his own Japan. It is also a remarkable work of imagination from one of our most respected contemporary authors.
