Jonathan Harr's nonfiction book A Civil Action details a lawsuit involving water pollution in Woburn, Massachusetts, during the 1980s.

Anne Anderson discovers that her kid has been diagnosed with leukemia and that her community has a high incidence of this very uncommon illness. She eventually joins other families and goes to Jan Schlichtmann, a lawyer, to discuss their alternatives.

At first, Schlichtmann refuses to accept the case since there isn't enough proof and the defendant is obvious. Upon resuming the investigation, Schlichtmann discovers evidence pointing to Riley Tannery, a Beatrice Foods subsidiary, W. R. Grace, a chemical firm, and another business called Unifirst as the sources of the trichloroethylene (TCE) pollution of the town's water system.

Throughout the legal proceedings, Schlichtmann enlists the aid of other lawyers. He spends extravagantly, just like he did in his previous litigation, but their assets are all strained to the breaking point due to the protracted discovery process and trial.
