A Long Walk to Water starts with two tales of a girl in Sudan in 2008 and a boy in Sudan in 1985, recounted in alternating portions. Nya, the little girl, walks two hours each day to a pond two hours away from her house to get water. Salva, the youngster, ends up becoming one of the "lost boys" of Sudan, refugees who travel the African continent on foot in quest of a safe haven and their relatives. Salva is a survivor who has endured every adversity, including loneliness, an armed rebel assault, and encounters with crocodiles and ferocious lions. His narrative then unexpectedly and poignantly intersects with Nya's.
