Madame Dubois said, "What happened here last night isn't allowed."

Inspector Beauvoir, who was famished, was so taken aback by what he had said that he refrained from eating any more of his roast beef on baguette.

He questioned, "You have a rule against murder?"

"I am. We made a promise when my husband and I purchased Bellechasse: "Everything that set foot on this land would be safe."

In the height of summer, Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache are commemorating their wedding anniversary in the opulent, remote Manoir Bellechasse, which is located close to Three Pines hamlet. They are not alone, however. Rich, well-educated, and dignified, the Finney family has also come for their own celebration.

Despite being surrounded by nature, the stunning Manoir Bellechasse has an unearthly presence. A dead corpse is left behind by a violent summer storm, and some unexpected visitors show up for the family reunion as the heat and humidity build. Chief Inspector Gamache has the task of exposing long-buried truths and animosities concealed beneath kind smiles. He follows the trail to Three Pines, into the shadowy areas of his own life, and ultimately to a terrifying conclusion.
