Every family is chaotic. A few are catastrophic.

Natalie Walker is the reason her sister and elder brother spent more than 15 years in jail. Shortly after that terrible night, she left California and hasn't spoken with any member of her family since. Now, Natalie gets a letter from a lawyer stating her estranged mother has passed away and bequeathed the family's historic Santa Cruz mansion to her, on the same day her boyfriend takes her dream job away from her. Kind of. Natalie and her siblings may only inherit if all three of their adult children return and claim it together.

With her stubborn cat in tow, Natalie makes the long trek to Santa Cruz with the intention of signing a few documents, spending a little time with her siblings Lynn and Jake, and returning to Boston to finish organizing her life. However, Jake—who is now a recognized ornithologist—is absent. Additionally, Lynn, a New York City undertaker, arrives with her adolescent son. Natalie unravels the guilt she's carried for so long, wondering how (or if) she can still have a connection with her siblings after all this time, as she and her nephew search for Jake and encounter a very attractive marine researcher who wins her over right away.

The messy yet endearing journey of a family trying to find one other again is navigated in A Very Typical Family. You'll be celebrating the strength of family and second chances after reading this first novel by Sierra Godfrey, which is filled with endearingly dark humor and endearing characters. Although the past cannot be changed, you have the freedom to select your destiny every day.

Additional Recognition for An Ordinary Family

A narrative that packs an emotional gut blow. One of the cutest eccentrics to grace the page since Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and The Cactus is Godfrey's redemption-seeking narrator. If you like characters who march to their own beats--and who doesn't--you'll love this rich and compelling story. --The Last Housewife author Ashley Winstead

A Very Typical Family skillfully navigates one dysfunctional family's difficult journey back to one another with humor and a large heart. Godfrey's first is a clever, sharply written, darkly hilarious, and sympathetic portrayal of what it means to return home in all senses. --Holly James, Nothing But the Truth author

An enduring tale of forgiveness and optimism, A Very Typical Family is both intensely emotional and darkly hilarious. A remarkable first book. **The author of Smart Girl Summer, Kristin Rockaway
