As the golden kid of the Rosewood public housing projects, Quinton Peters was offered full scholarships to two different Ivy League universities. Amari Peters, 13, his younger sister, is perplexed as to why there isn't more of a fuss when he vanishes inexplicably. Why isn't the news replete with his story? Why do the authorities presume without question that he was involved in illicit activities?

Then Amari finds, in her brother's old closet, a ticking briefcase. A briefcase intended solely for her perusal. It appears that Quinton was significantly more than she had realized. He has nominated her for a summer audition at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, which is a covert organization. If only Amari could come to terms with the fact that mermaids, dwarves, yetis, and magicians are all real, she would know the answer to what happened to him is somewhere inside. This is something she is forced to face the moment she gets a weredragon as a roommate.

Amari will be up against some of the wealthiest children in the country, who have grown up with knowledge of the paranormal and can confidently respond to inquiries such as which two Great Beasts live in the Atlantic Ocean and how old Merlin is. Amari learns a lesson just by navigating the Bureau, which has signs like "Department of Hidden Places this way, or is it?" As if all of that wasn't enough, Amari is granted an unlawful ability, but every trainee in the Bureau has a gift that has been amplified to supernatural levels to aid them in their work. As if she required one more thing to be unique.

Amari has never felt more alone than she does right now, with an evil magician threatening the entire supernatural realm and her own classmates perceiving her as an enemy. She might not learn Quinton's fate, though, if she fails the three tryouts.
