Theodor Geisel wrote a response in 1957 to a Life magazine story criticizing the use of dull reading primers in classrooms. For those boring primers, Geisel wrote "The Cat in the Hat," a mere 223 words written under the pen name "Dr. Seuss" (Seuss was Geisel's middle name). Geisel and his spouse founded Beginner Books as a result of the book's immediate popularity. Geisel authored other best-selling books under this imprint, such as "Green Eggs and Ham," "Fox in Socks," and "Hop on Pop."
