Sydney has unique blood. That's because she's an alchemist, one of a kind of people who experiment with magic and build a bridge between the human and vampire worlds. They guard both human life and vampire secrets. However, Sydney's most recent vampire experience put her in serious difficulty with the other alchemists. Sydney first believes that she is still being punished for her intricate partnership with dhampir Rose Hathaway when she is ripped from her bed in the middle of the night. However, what happens is far worse. The Moroi had to put Jill Dragomir, the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir, into hiding since she is in grave danger. In the unlikeliest of places—a human boarding school in Palm Springs, California—Sydney is asked to take up the role of Jill's guardian and protector in order to prevent a civil war. Sydney does not want to be seen as having vampire sympathies. She now has to share a home with one.

Although the Moroi court thinks Jill and Sydney will be secure at Amberwood Prep, there are dangers, diversions, and forbidden romances to be aware of both within and beyond the school. The drama has barely begun when they went into hiding.
