Says Reacher, "This is a random universe." "Every now and then, everything works out perfectly."

That's not the case right now.

Reacher is travelling in silence on a Greyhound bus, having all the time in the world to go wherever he's going. After that, he gets off the bus to assist an elderly guy who is clearly a victim waiting to happen. But good deeds—you know what they say. Reacher is now trying to put things right.

Due to a few well-intentioned errors, an elderly couple now owes a large sum of money to some extremely terrible individuals. Reacher finds himself in the midst of a vicious turf battle between competing Ukrainian and Albanian gangs after making a series of rash decisions.

Reacher has to remain one step ahead of the assassins, thugs, and loan sharks. He sets out to overthrow the mighty and make the avaricious pay, teamed up with a frustrated waitress who may know a bit more than she's letting on. It's unlikely. He is up against the odds. However, Reacher is a proponent of a certain form of justice—the kind that only occurs very seldom.
