Rumors of gold in the icy Klondike drew thousands of immigrants to the Pacific Northwest during the early months of the Civil War. Russian prospectors were eager to compete, so they hired inventor Leviticus Blue to build a powerful machine that could dig through Alaska's ice. Dr. Blue's Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine was created in this way.

However, the Boneshaker's first test run went horribly wrong, demolishing many blocks of Seattle's downtown and discovering a subsurface blight gas vein that converted anybody who inhaled it into a living corpse.

Sixteen years later, a wall has been constructed to contain the poisonous and destroyed city. Briar Wilkes, Blue's widow, resides just beyond it. Despite having a damaged reputation and a teenage son to provide for, she and Ezekiel are making it work. until Ezekiel starts a covert campaign to alter the course of history.

His mission will lead him behind the wall and into a metropolis full of air pirates, criminal rulers, hungry zombies, and highly armed refugees. And the only person who can save him is Briar.
