Hannah Swensen, the proprietor of a bakery, is moving from Lake Eden to sunny California to assist a friend. However, she is abruptly transported back to a murderous Minnesota winter by an unexpected phone call.

Hannah leaves the sound stage of a movie studio and heads straight to the Los Angeles airport upon learning that Detective Lonnie Murphy, her sister Michelle's lover, is the main suspect in a murder investigation.

She returns to cold Minnesota and finds that Lonnie's innocence will be more difficult to prove than the cause of a dish gone awry.Only a portion of the evening that he went out to a neighborhood pub and ultimately gave a very inebriated woman a ride home is recalled by Lonnie. He doesn't remember anything else until the next morning when he woke up on her couch, but he knows he helped her to her bedroom. He was surprised to find her dead when he went to the bedroom to see how she was doing.

Hannah is unsure of what to believe; all she knows is that it is nearly impossible to clear a person who is mentally incapacitated, especially because Chief Detective Mike Kingston and Lonnie's brother, Detective Rick Murphy, have been removed from the investigation. Hannah has to gather enough evidence to uncover a flaky killer before everything falls in on Lonnie like a massive slice of coconut layer cake.
