Dark Roads

Nearly 500 miles of the Cold Creek Highway travel through the untamed wilderness of British Columbia before arriving at the west coast. Large and remote, it has developed into a top predator hunting area. Young women on the road have vanished for decades. Hitchhikers and drivers, as well as anyone traveling through or residing in one of the small communities dotted across the area, have frequently become victims. Furthermore, no murderer or kidnapper who has followed the roadway has ever been apprehended or prosecuted.

Cold Creek is Hailey McBride's home. She learned from her father to appreciate the natural world, to live off the land, and to never drive alone. Now that he's gone, Hailey is left a young orphan under the guardianship of her aunt, whose husband is a police officer and uses his badge to intimidate and control Hailey. Hailey, overwhelmed with sadness and unable to work, socialize, or date, disappears into the mountains, hoping that everyone will think she's disappeared. There were rumors that she was abducted by the highway killer, who had killed another person this summer.

After a year, Beth Chevalier travels to Cold Creek, the home of her deceased sister Amber. Like Amber, Beth is estranged from her parents and seeking closure. She works as a waitress at the neighborhood diner because she is desperate to know what happened to her and why. However, Beth becomes a target because of her pursuit of information, which also poses a risk to the truth about Hailey's disappearance.
