After years of being out, the weres and shifters have finally made the decision to follow in the footsteps of the undead and come out to the general public. Naturally, Sookie Stackhouse is already aware of them; after all, her employer at Merlotte's club, Sam, is a shapeshifter, and her brother transforms into a panther during full moons.

The big reveal starts out well until the horrifyingly disfigured corpse of a were-panther is discovered in Merlotte's parking lot. Sookie then decides to utilize her telepathic ability to find the perpetrator. However, the threat facing Bon Temps is far larger than one killer: an ancient, more formidable, and much more reclusive species of creatures than werewolves or vampires is getting ready for battle. And in their age-old conflict, Sookie is an all-too-human pawn.
