Three males approach a dentist in a Chicago suburb and tell him to get into the trunk of his Lexus. Two skilled and self-assured guys kidnap Jack Reacher and an unidentified lady in broad daylight on a downtown walkway. They stop them at gunpoint and force them into the same automobile. The dentist is left tied and gagged inside his car along with the lady's abandoned belongings, two gallons of gasoline, and a burning match when Reacher and the woman are later transferred to another vehicle and taken away. The lady is a Special Agent from the Chicago office, and the FBI is frantic to save her since it always looks out for its own and because she is not just another agent.
