The five factions in Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago society are Candour (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the courageous), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the clever). Each faction is committed to the development of a certain virtue. Every year on a certain day, sixteen-year-olds are required to choose the faction they will dedicate the remainder of their life to. Beatrice must choose between being who she really is and being with her family; she cannot have both. She therefore takes a decision that shocks everyone, including herself.

Beatrice adopts the name Tris for the very competitive initiation that follows, and she battles with the other initiates to live up to their decision. Together, they have to go through gruelling endurance tests on the physical level and demanding psychological simulations, some of which have dire repercussions. Tris has to figure out who her true friends are as initiation changes them all, and how precisely a relationship with a sometimes interesting, occasionally annoying guy fits into the life she's chosen. However, Tris also has a secret that she has chosen to keep to herself since she has been informed that it might be fatal. She also learns that although her apparently ideal society is threatened by discontent and mounting conflict, her secret might either rescue her loved ones or end her life.
