In the little village of Castle Rock, rumours spread swiftly. For this reason, Scott Carey only feels comfortable sharing his unusual illness with his friend Doctor Bob Ellis. He is dropping weight without growing any smaller, and the scales show the same reading whether he is wearing clothing or not, regardless of how heavy they are.

Additionally, Scott now has new neighbours, Deirdre McComb and her wife Missy Donaldson, who have built a "fine dining experience" in town, but the residents are not exactly fond of this establishment since they don't really fit the mould of what the community considers to be a desirable lifestyle. Furthermore, it seems that Scott and the couple are locked in a fight about the dogs' messes on his grass. Deirdre is very cold, while Missy is kind and amiable.

As the community gets ready for the annual Thanksgiving 12K race, Scott learns about the discrimination the ladies experience and makes an effort to assist. Unexpected friendships blossom, and the mystery surrounding Scott's illness inspires the best in those who have indulged in the worst aspects of themselves and others.
