War and pestilence have destroyed much of New York City, and most of society has moved underground to subterranean enclaves where people only live until their early 20s. Deuce, who turns fifteen on her birthday, assumes the job of a Huntress and is matched with Fade, an adolescent Hunter who grew up on Topside. The elders ignore her and Fade's warnings when they learn that the tunnel monsters, also known as Freaks, have destroyed the nearby enclave and seem to be becoming more organized. The girl born in darkness must also live in the daytime, guided by Fade's long-forgotten memories, among the ruins of a city whose population has shrunk to a few deadly gangs after Deuce and Fade are banished from the enclave.

The gripping young adult book by Ann Aguirre tells the tale of two young people in a post-apocalyptic world who must deal with emotions and perils beyond anything they have ever experienced.
