While Andrew "Ender" Wiggin believes he is playing computer-simulated war games, he is really involved in far more desperate activities. Ender, the product of genetic research, could be the military genius Earth sorely needs to fight an extraterrestrial adversary that wants to wipe out all human existence. The only ways to find out are to either completely kill Ender or put him through more rigorous training in an effort to uncover the gem hidden within. When it starts, Ender Wiggin is six years old. He will mature quickly.

However, Ender is not the only outcome of the study. It's been a century since the Buggers started the war, and almost as long has been spent searching for the ideal commander. Though they vary greatly from one another, Ender's two elder siblings, Peter and Valentine, are just as strange as he is. Valentine almost seemed incapable of using violence at all, while Peter was much too violently wildly aggressive. Both were deemed unfit for the military's needs. But they are driven by their jealousy of Ender, and by their inbred drive for power. Peter wants to become a king and take charge of the political system. Valentine's skills focus more on subtly influencing the opinions of both elites and commoners via very persuasive writing. These two start working together to determine the fate of Earth, which would have no future at all if their brother Ender fails, while concealing their names and youth behind the anonymity of the computer networks.
