Maris Matherly-Reed, a book editor in New York, is able to recognize a potential bestseller even if it is only a first draft sent in by a writer only known as P.M.E., with a mysterious island off the coast of Georgia as the return address. Maris finds him intriguing enough to pursue.

On her visit to an abandoned and haunting cotton farm in Georgia to meet the enigmatic author, Maris meets Parker Evans. Parker is a wheelchair-bound man who keeps his history a secret. Teaseling his manuscript out of him chapter by chapter, Maris finds herself engrossed in his story about two buddies who charter a boat for a night of drinking and sex with a young lady. From the voyage, just one person will return.

Afraid of her marriage to writer and co-publisher Noah Reed and troubled by her sexual attraction to Parker, Maris leaves for New York, where the arrival of Parker's most recent chapters persuades her that they are real. She questions how well she really knows her husband and embarks on a perilous quest to uncover the truth about a horrific murder and a guy who would use anybody, even her, to get vengeance.
