Learning how to curtsy correctly is one thing. Learning to throw a knife and curtsy at the same time is a different story. Here at Finishing School, welcome.

Sophronia, 14, presents a significant challenge to her impoverished mother. Sophronia is not interested in following social graces; instead, she enjoys climbing trees and taking apart clocks. Her family can only hope that guests will never see her terrible curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is fervently hoping her daughter grows up to be a refined woman. Thus, she enrols Sophronia at the Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality, run by Mademoiselle Geraldine.

However, Sophronia quickly discovers that the school is not quite what her mother had planned for. Young women learn to complete everything at Mademoiselle Geraldine's. They do, of course, acquire the great skills of dancing, attire, and manners, but they also learn how to cope with espionage, mortality, and distraction—all in the most politically correct ways conceivable. Sophronia and her companions are going to have an exciting first year in school.
