When Frank Mackey was nineteen years old in 1985, he was living in a modest apartment on Faithful Place with his family and growing up in poverty in Dublin's inner city. But he had far higher goals in mind. He was all ready to go to London with his girlfriend, Rosie Daly, get married, get a decent career, and escape their manufacturing jobs, poverty, and previous life.

But Rosie never showed up on the night of the winter solstice when they were meant to go. Because of his drunken father, crazy mother, and generally chaotic family, Frank took it for granted that she had ignored him. He never returned home.

Rosie didn't either. Everyone assumed she had traveled alone to England and was now leading a glamorous new life. Twenty-two years later, Frank is returning home whether he wants to or not, when he finds Rosie's bag hidden behind a fireplace in a run-down house on Faithful Place.

It's far simpler to be drawn in than it is to escape. Frank returns immediately to the murky web of connections he left behind. In case his commitment to his family and community renders him a liability, the police investigating the case want him out of the way. Faithful Place has never been a fan of law enforcement, so now that he's a detective, the Place wants him gone. Frank is only interested in learning what became of Rosie Daly, and he will stop at nothing to accomplish this goal, whether it means hurting himself or someone else.
