The most well-known inhabitant of Moonlight Bay, California, which has 12,000 residents, is Christopher Snow. This is because Chris, 28, suffers from xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a condition that causes extreme light sensitivity, making it impossible for him to leave his home during the day, go into a room with normal lighting, or use a computer. Since Chris is naturally drawn to the dark, his parents, who are both professors, decided to move to Moonlight Bay where he could freely cruise the town on his bike, go surfing under the stars, and explore the town when most people were asleep.

However, Chris's sheltered existence is about to change forever when his father, Steven Snow, passes away from illness and his bright mother, a scientist, was murdered in a car accident two years earlier, as the novel starts. When we first meet Chris, he's getting ready to go outside into the late afternoon light to visit the hospital. His father says to Chris in his last hours that he is "sorry" and that he should "fear nothing"—cryptic statements that Chris finds difficult to understand.

When Chris goes downstairs for his last goodbyes, he discovers that the funeral director and another man he doesn't know are secretly replacing Steven Snow's body with the body of a hitchhiker. The hitchhiker's body is being transported not to the crematorium but to a secret location. Steven Snow's body has been removed to the hospital basement for transport to the funeral home/crematorium.

This scenario serves as Chris's first clue of a plot that many of his town's residents are part of. Chris's parents sought to shield him from it because they were aware of it. The terrifying nightly guests at his beach home have given his closest buddy suspicions that something is up. And the first person who tries to tell Chris what's happening and alert him to the unique risk he faces will be brutally killed.

Despite his upbringing in seclusion, Christopher Snow will discover throughout the course of this novel that he has the spirit of a valiant explorer and warrior. By the time the novel ends, he will have slain a man, learned how his mother contributed to the conspiracy's inception, and recognized the remarkable guardians who have been watching over him for years without his knowledge. He'll come to understand that although some regard him with reverential admiration, his life and everyone he knows will never be the same.
