The mastermind is none other than John Rothstein, the renowned writer who gave rise to the cult figure of Jimmy Gold despite having not released a book in decades. Morris Bellamy is furious not just because Rothstein is no longer supplying books, but also because Jimmy Gold, the nonconformist, has sold out for an advertising job. Yes, Morris murders Rothstein and takes all the money out of his safe, but the true prize is a stash of notebooks that at least one more Gold novel is in.
