In a race against time, Cork must save ruthless mercenaries from killing his wife, an enigmatic stranger, and an Ojibwe healer.

Henry Meloux, an Ojibwe healer from long ago, saw himself die. He attempts to quietly get ready for the end of his long life as he strolls around the Northwoods alone. However, tranquility is certain to evade him as hunters prowl the forests in search of Dolores Morriseau, a stranger who sought refuge from the doctor and his knowledge.

Meloux leads this foreigner and the wife of Cork O'Connor, his great-niece, to safety far into the Boundary Waters, where he has lived for over a century. Meloux has to use every trick in the book to avoid being killed by the mercenaries who follow on what may be his last trek into this cherished area.

Cork is working tirelessly in Aurora to identify the hunters and the cause for their unrelenting pursuit, but he doesn't have much information. Cork, desperate, starts searching for the murderers, but dusk and a late-season snowfall put his hunting prowess to the test. He is fully aware that time is running short as each hour goes by. However, his greatest adversary in this lethal game of cat and mouse could be his own intense self-doubt over his capacity to rescue the people he cares about.
