I was hit by a lightning strike through an open window in our trailer when I was fifteen years old.I mostly recovered. My right leg suffers spells of weakness and my body has a peculiar red spiderweb pattern. My right hand shakes sometimes. My head hurts. My anxieties are many. Moreover, I can locate the deceased. The lecturer was intrigued by that particular section.

Dr. Clyde Nunley, an anthropology professor, invites Harper Connelly and her stepbrother Tolliver to Memphis so that Harper may showcase her extraordinary gift. And where better than at an ancient graveyard to have that demonstration?

When Harper finds herself standing on a cemetery and sensing two corpses underneath her—one of a long-dead man and the other of a little girl who just passed away—Dr. Nunley doesn't try to disguise his doubt. Harper's claim is validated when the grave is uncovered. The deceased girl is eleven-year-old Tabitha Morgenstern, who was kidnapped from Nashville two years before. Harper had attempted, but was unable, to locate the child. The police become suspicious of her because of the coincidence, so she and Tolliver go on their own quest for the murderer. They make a nocturnal visit to the cemetery, hoping that Harper can sense something further about the murder.

Then, a third dead corpse is discovered in the grave the next morning.
