Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959: A local delivery guy discovers something dreadful at the conclusion of an intensely hot day, next to a stream on the grounds of the imposing and enigmatic home. The little village of Tambilla is drawn into one of the most horrifying and puzzling murder cases in South Australia's history when a police inquiry is launched.

Sixty years later, Jess is a story-seeking journalist. She has spent over twenty years living and working in London, but now that she has lost her full-time job, she is having financial difficulties. Suddenly, she receives a call calling her back to Sydney, where her adored grandma Nora—who reared Jess while her mother was unable to—has fallen and has to be rushed to the hospital.

Throughout her life, Nora has been a lively and powerful figure; she is youthful-looking despite her age and resolute. Jess is shocked to see her grandma weak and disoriented when she pays her a visit in the hospital. The news that Nora's maid was preoccupied in the weeks before to her accident and that she had fallen on the attic stairs—the one area Jess was not allowed to play in as a child—makes the situation even more troubling.

Jess undertakes some own research to tie up some loose threads in Nora's home. A real crime book detailing the police investigation into a long-forgotten tragedy—the Turner Family Tragedy of Christmas Eve, 1959—is found by Nora in her bedroom. Jess discovers a startling link between her own family and this once-infamous tragedy—a crime that has never been completely solved—only after skimming through the book. And a cold case may be the finest diversion a journalist in need of a story can discover.

Homecoming is a multigenerational epic story that explores the themes of what we would do for the people we love and how we keep the falsehoods we tell hidden. It looks at the strength of motherhood, the destructive force of well guarded secrets, and the ability of the truth to heal. Above all, it is a captivating and very fulfilling book written by one of the best authors now at work.
