1846; Rhode Island. Writer Merritt Fernsby, who is estranged from his family, is taken aback upon receiving an isolated home on Narragansett Bay as an inheritance. Merritt is prepared to call the property home despite the fact that it has been vacant for more than a century—until he discovers he has no other option. Merritt is going to be denied entry to Whimbrel House, as its doors crash close and lock behind him. Never.

The Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms's Hulda Larkin is skilled at taming these buildings to maintain their mystical and historical relevance. She is aware of the risks associated with families where children throw fits. Her recommendation is that Merritt should turn Whimbrel House into an ally. She will also need to move in for it to happen.

Even with her augury, magic equipment, and newly hired workers with uncanny training, Hulda finds that her profession is surprisingly challenging. She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house’s secrets run deeper than they anticipated. Not only can the walls exhibit sentience, but there's another reason for concern: an external threat to Whimbrel House's enchantments may pose a greater threat than the rattling within.
