Malcolm Polstead is the kind of kid who is very perceptive but not particularly well-known. Therefore, it might have been unavoidable that he would become spies.

On the banks of the Thames, Malcolm's father owns and operates an inn called the Trout, through which the whole university community passes. Malcolm and Asta, his daemon, often hear rumours and gossip, as well as the odd scandal, but one day, during a relentless winter of rain, Malcolm learns of something novel: intrigue.

He discovers a covert letter asking about a hazardous material known as dust, and the spy who was supposed to receive it discovers him.

Malcolm notices strange figures around when she tells him to keep an eye out. These include Lord Asriel, who is obviously on the run, Magisterium enforcement officers, an Egyptian called Coram who has warnings just for Malcolm, and a beautiful lady who has an evil monkey for a dæmon. Everyone is inquiring about the same thing: Lyra, a girl who is just a baby.

People are drawn to Lyra as they are drawn to a magnet. And Malcolm is willing to take on any risk and even give up all to get her through the storm safely.
