Despite just being seventeen years old, Marcus, also known as "w1n5t0n," believes he already understands how the system works and how to use it. Clever, quick, and attuned to the ways of the networked world, he easily outwits the obtrusive but unreliable monitoring devices at his high school.

However, when he and his pals are engulfed in the aftermath of a significant terrorist assault on San Francisco, his whole life is turned upside down. Marcus and his group are captured by the Department of Homeland Security for being in the wrong location at the wrong time. They are taken to a secret jail and subjected to days of torturous questioning.

Upon their eventual release from the DHS, his wounded closest buddy Darryl remains hidden. Every resident of the city is now considered a potential terrorist, and the city has turned into a police state. Since he is aware that no one would accept his account, he is left with no choice except to use "M1k3y" to overthrow the DHS directly.
