Marie would agree without hesitation if NASA gave her the lead on a neuroengineering project. After years of living off the scraps of academia, this would be a genuine dream come true for her. Of course. But Levi Ward and the mother of modern physics never had to share the lead.

Yes, Levi has a striking appearance—he's tall, black, and has piercing eyes. Indeed, on her first day in the lab, she unintentionally damseled in distress, and he firmly held her in his tightly corded arms like a romantic tale hero. However, throughout graduate school, Levi made it quite obvious how he felt about Bee: rivals are most effective when they are found in distant galaxies of their own.

Now that her tools have vanished and the employees are avoiding her, Bee finds herself in a difficult situation with her failing job. Bee swears she can see Levi melting into an ally, supporting her moves, seconding her ideas—devouring her with those eyes. Maybe it's just her occipital cortex playing tricks on her.
