When a summer romance resulted into an unplanned baby, Stephanie Land's aspirations to leave her hometown in the Pacific Northwest and pursue her goals of going to college and becoming a writer were dashed at the age of 28. To make ends meet, Stephanie took up housekeeping. She was determined to give her daughter the greatest life possible, so she worked long hours, attended online courses to acquire a college degree, and started writing nonstop.

In Maid, the underbelly of upper-middle class America is explored, along with the realities of serving them. Regarding her connection with her clients—many of whom she learns a great deal about despite not knowing her from any previous cleaner—Stephanie says, "I'd become a nameless ghost." She starts to find optimism in her own journey as she learns more about the love and sorrow in her customers' lives.

Her work as a journalist provides voice to individuals chasing the American Dream from below the poverty line as well as "servant" workers. Though it is not only Stephanie's narrative, Maid is hers.
