The narrative, which takes place in Hawaii over a century ago, centers on seven-year-old Rachel Kalama, a lively child from Hawaii who aspires to go to far places like her father, a merchant fisherman. Rachel is taken from her family and home and sent to Kalaupapa, the leprosy community on the island of Moloka'i that is under quarantine. This is where her life should finish, but instead she finds that it has barely begun.
