Three things are clear to bounty hunter Stephanie Plum of New Jersey: People don't simply disappear. Never enrage the elderly. Additionally, disregard Tiki's instructions.

After a dull summer spent pursuing low-level skips for her cousin Vinnie's bail bond company, Stephanie Plum is finally given a job that has the potential to turn her chequebook around. Following an urgent appendectomy, Geoffrey Cubbin, who is on trial for embezzling millions from Trenton's top assisted-living home, has inexplicably disappeared from the hospital. Stephanie now has the task of finding the con artist. Sadly, Cubbin has vanished without a trace, his greedy wife, or a witness. There are rumblings that he may not have survived the risky escape, or that he may not have had assistance. Grandma Mazur goes undercover for Stephanie since she finds it difficult for her to fit in at assisted living and the medical personnel seems to be more secretive than the security. But when another convict goes missing from the same facility, Stephanie finds herself compelled to collaborate with Trenton's sexiest police officer, Joe Morelli, to solve the crime.

The true issue is that without Cubbin, there would be no way to pay the rent. In a desperate attempt to make ends meet, or maybe simply to survive, Stephanie takes a second job protecting her sly and delicious tutor Ranger from a lethal Special Forces opponent. Despite her reputation for sniffing out problems, Stephanie could have dug a bit further this time. However, a little food sickness, a few threatening letters, and an overly taffeta bridesmaid's dress never killed anybody, did they? Stephanie Plum has to keep in mind that without courage, there can be no glory.
