The New York Times Book Review describes Laurie R. King as a creator of "lively adventure in the very best of intellectual company" with her popular mystery series starring Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell. Now, the bestselling author of The Beekeeper's Apprentice and The Moor—the first person to win the British Creasey and American Edgar Awards for a first book (A Grave Talent) since Patricia Cornwell—reveals a hitherto unrecorded tale of Russell's apprenticeship to the renowned investigator.

At the end of 1918, after being forced to leave the lush and green country of England, Russell and Holmes go to British-occupied Palestine with the help of Mycroft, the mysterious brother of Holmes.

"Gentlemen, we are at your service." In the orange trees that encircle the Holy Land, Holmes thus welcomes the two travel-grimed Arab figures who receive them. What place in Mycroft's plan for this region the British had just taken from the Turks for themselves could the erratic Ali and the reserved Mahmoud have? Following a battery of exams, Holmes and Russell discover that their guides are working for His Majesty's Government. They assume the identity of Bedouins—Russell as the young man without facial hair named "Amir"—in order to accompany them on a surreptitious reconnaissance expedition across the arid terrain.

There's been a spate of killings lately that don't appear to have anything to do with the rising hostilities between Christians, Jews, and Muslims, but Holmes insists on reconstructing the most recent one in the gully of the desert where it happened. His unique discoveries will take him and Russell into deadly peril as well as maze-like bazaars, critter-infested inns, and cliffhanging monasteries. Russell bravely wields a gun and even tests the art of seduction to rescue her mentor, whose questions endanger his life. Bruised and beaten, the two make their way up to the glittering city of Jerusalem, where they will finally confront their enemy, whose thirst for power and brutality might turn the city's holiest site into ruins and set this region on fire.

O Jerusalem enthralls readers with its thrilling story of pursuit, which is both classically Holmesian and enchantingly new. It is well written, has vibrant characters, and has a stunning historical atmosphere.
