Two American expats who are enamored with the Amanda Knox trial find themselves at the center of murder and fame in glamorous late-aughts Berlin in this explosive debut with a wicked sense of humor.

Art student Zoe Beech is studying abroad in Berlin, the bohemian capital of Europe, in an attempt to get away from the anguish caused by the tragic death of her closest friend. Without direction, Zoe depends on the plans of her fellow exchange student Hailey Mader, who aspires to be an art star and is a huge fan of Warhol and Britney Spears. Unaware that a well-known thriller writer is renting out an apartment, Hailey finds the listing on Craigslist. Moving into the high-ceilinged pre-war apartment, the ladies feel as if they've won the lotto. They soon discover that Beatrice, their landlady, who is meant to be living in Vienna on a residency, is observing them; in fact, it seems like the plot of her next novel is centered on their lives. Considering their boring habits, such as their weekly nachos and Law & Order binges, Hailey demands that they develop into characters worthy of a book. They start to question whose tale they are living and how it will finish as the year goes on and things get out of hand.
