As the world descends into chaos and insanity in 2025, one lady sets out on a perilous trip in search of a brighter future.

Living in one of the few safe communities on the fringes of Los Angeles is Lauren Olamina's family. Lauren's father, a pastor, and a few other residents attempt to preserve what is left of a society that has been devastated by drugs, sickness, conflict, and protracted water shortages inside the walls of their fortified enclave. Lauren suffers from hyperempathy, a disorder that causes her to be very sensitive to other people's suffering, while her father attempts to guide others toward the road of righteousness.

Lauren's family is murdered in a fire that destroys their property, and she is thrown into a dangerous world. Lauren must go north to safety with a small group of other refugees while coming up with a ground-breaking concept that might lead to the abolition of all humankind.
