Jack Ryan was a historian, teacher, and recent ex-Marine temporarily residing in England while conducting book research. Long before he was President or the head of the CIA, before he battled terrorist attacks on the White House or the Super Bowl, and even before a submarine named Red October made its treacherous way across the Atlantic. He had come to the attention of Vice Admiral James Greer, the Deputy Director of the CIA, and Sir Basil Charleston, the British SIS, after a string of lethal encounters with an IRA splinter group. Greer asked Jack if he would like to join the team as a freelance analyst, and Jack readily agreed. He couldn't resist the offer, and he was certain he could fit it in around his other job.

Then Jack completely lost track of the rest of his duties since one of his first tasks was to assist in debriefing a high-ranking Soviet defector. The defector had a remarkable story to tell: Yuri Andropov and other top Soviet officials were plotting to kill Pope John Paul II.

Is it really true? Ryan faces a deadly game of cat and mouse between the Soviet Union and the United States as the days and weeks pass. He must fight to first attempt to confirm the scheme and then to stop it, but this is a wild new world, and nothing he has done before has prepared him for it. Not only will the Pope's life ultimately be in jeopardy, but also the stability of the West... and it could already be too late for a rookie CIA analyst to intervene.
