In order to become the enigmatic stranger who has suddenly arisen, Jack buryes his history. In a frantic search for information, Addie is forced to examine her own heart as well as Jack's deceit and dark secrets in an effort to find proof that would either vindicate or save the man she has grown to love.

Jack St. Bride makes the decision to start again after stumbling upon the quiet New England village of Salem Falls. Jack, who is tall, blonde, and attractive, used to be a well-liked instructor and soccer coach at a prep school for females. However, his reputation was destroyed when a student's infatuation set off a chain reaction of accusations. Jack hides his background now that he is employed at the Do-Or-Diner, washing dishes for Addie Peabody for minimal pay. He is happy to become the enigmatic stranger who has suddenly arisen.

Addie Peabody is just as careful with men as Jack St. Bride is toward women, as if she had her own ghosts haunting her. However, as this quiet stranger seamlessly becomes part of the diner's everyday life, she discovers that he fits just as perfectly within her heart. Gradually, a kind, healing love blossoms between them.

However, Jack's decision to establish roots in Salem Falls could be fatal. Amidst the centuries-old cathedrals painted white, four affluent and bored young ladies have created a coven that blurs the boundaries between harmless fun and malevolent purpose. The ladies, who are quick to pick up on the gorgeous new employee at Addie's Diner, completely upend Jack's worldview with a devastating accusation that makes history repeat itself and compels Jack to once again assert his innocence. Everything in Salem Falls seems to be out of control: a once-safe haven becomes perilous, a little child confronts evil head-on, and a Ph.D.-holding dishwasher is exposed as a former con artist. The edges of this little community start to peel apart as Jack's secret history catches up with him, and the unfolding reality takes on a grayscale, hazy quality. Desperate for a solution, Addie is now forced to search inside herself for proof that would either exonerate or absolve the man she has grown to love, as well as through Jack's falsehoods and murky secrets.
