Sea Prayer is a brief, profound, and beautifully illustrated book by Khaled Hosseini that was produced in response to the present refugee crisis. It is written as a letter from a father to his kid on the eve of their voyage. The father, keeping an eye on his sleeping baby, muses over the perilous sea journey that lies ahead of them. It also paints a striking picture of their pre-war existence in Homs, Syria, and how quickly that city changed from a peaceful neighborhood to a deadly combat zone.

Hosseini was inspired to write this narrative by the menacing image of three-year-old Alan Kurdi, a Syrian boy whose body washed up on a Turkish beach in September 2015. Through this book, he hopes to honor the millions of families—like Kurdi's—that have been torn apart by conflict and persecution. He will donate the book's author proceeds to The Khaled Hosseini Foundation and the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in order to support vital relief efforts for refugees all over the world. In addition, Hosseini is the creator of The Khaled Hosseini Foundation, a nonprofit that offers aid to the Afghan people, and a Goodwill Envoy to the UNHCR.
