It's like a ghost, Marjorie Glatt thought. Thirteen-year-old Practical, who manages the family washing company, goes to school every day and deals with harsh clients, torturous physical education lessons, and a meticulous Mr. Saubertuck who is out to ruin all she has worked so hard for.

It is a ghost, Wendell. His daily routine consists of ineffectual death treatment, a sheet-dependent identity, and a perilous yearning to find meaning in the forbidden human world for a youngster who lost his existence much too soon.

As their worlds intersect, Wendell turns Glatt's Laundry into his nocturnal playground and turns it into a sheet during the day, leaving Marjorie to deal with mysterious catastrophes. Wendell inadvertently destroys Marjorie's existence, which she is fighting to sustain, in an effort to build a new eternity for himself.
