"LET THE WICKED BE ASHAMED, AND LET THEM BE SILENT IN THE GRAVE."

The last warning that Sir Edward Grey, the darling of London society, gets from his assassin are these menacing lines torn from the pages of a Psalms book. In front of his wife Julia and a large group of dinner guests at their London house, Sir Edward passes away before he can reveal them to Nicholas Brisbane, the private investigative agent he has hired for his security.

Julia, who had been ready to believe that Edward's death was the result of a chronic medical illness, is furious when Brisbane pays her a visit and implies that Sir Edward may have been murdered. She later regrets her response after learning the truth and seeing the incriminating document for herself.

Julia enlists the mysterious Brisbane to assist her in her investigation into Edward's death, determined to bring her husband's killer to justice. Ignoring his cautions that the inquiry would be difficult, if not impossible, Julia continues, following a trail of evidence that bring her closer to a murderer who is eagerly awaiting her arrival and even more awful realities.
