When Sophie Amundsen, then fourteen, returns home from school one day, she discovers two notes with the same question on them: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that captivating beginning, Sophie develops an obsession with inquiries that lead her much beyond her current understanding of her Norwegian community. Through those letters, she enrols in a kind of correspondence course with a mystery philosopher, covering the works of Socrates through Sartre, all the while getting letters meant for another girl. Hilde is a who? Furthermore, why does her letter keep appearing? Sophie has to use the philosophy she is studying to solve this puzzle, but the reality is considerably more nuanced than she had anticipated.
