Richard Cypher's world was upended in Wizard's First Rule. Before becoming the Seeker of Truth, Richard was only an ordinary woods guide, but he was compelled to do so in order to defend the world from Darken Rahl, the most powerful and ferociously violent magician the world had ever seen. Kahlan, his lover and the last survivor of the Confessors, accompanied him on this heroic journey. Prior to Rahl's terrible scourge, Kahlan had delivered a strong but kind justice to the realm. Rahl's rule over the globe was about to end, but Zedd, the only remaining wizard to stand up to him, helped them by casting him into the underworld.

However, the underworld's barrier has been shattered, and Rahl is now summoning a terrifying force from beyond it that he has never used before. Terrifying creatures break out through the ripped curtain, causing havoc on the gullible world above.

If Rahl is not stopped, he will unleash the Keeper, a malevolent force that is so immense and repugnant that it can never be subdued once it is liberated.

Richard and Kahlan have to take on Rahl and his dreadful goons. Richard's birthright and curse are magic, thus he must first suffer through the Sisters of the Light's care or perish from the agony of magic. While Richard travels the difficult path to the Sisters' forbidden city, Kahlan is forced to go a long and perilous way to the ancient wizards' fortress of Aydindril in the hopes of finding Zedd and the only assistance he can provide to their urgent cause.

Nothing will save them from a fate of brutal death, except for war, agony, torture, and treachery, unless their strength and faith are paired with good fortune and they discover the elusive Stone of Tears.
