The story of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer centers on the early exploits of Thomas Sawyer, the schoolboy protagonist of the book who is known for stirring up trouble and conflict before he even exists. Just along the Mississippi River in the charming town of St. Petersburg, Tom lives with his Aunt Polly, half-brother Sid, and cousin Mary. It is said that St. Petersburg has a classic small-town feel, with a strong Christian presence, a close-knit social network, and a familiar vibe.

In contrast to his brother Sid, Tom gets "lickings" from Aunt Polly. He is often getting into trouble, preferring to skip school and frequently climbs out of his bedroom window at night to go on adventures with his companion Huckleberry Finn, the social misfit of the town. Even though Tom hates going to school, he is very smart and would usually get away with his antics if Sid weren't such a "tattle-tale."

Tom is given the task of whitewashing the house's fence by Aunt Polly as punishment for skipping class to go swimming. Tom devises a cunning plan to trick the local lads into doing the work for him, persuading them of the benefits of whitewashing. Tom is just as outrageous in school, drawing attention with his yelling, running, and chasing of other guys. Tom tries to get the attention of Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, with his typical antics, and convinces her to become "engaged" by kissing him. However, their relationship ends when she finds out that Tom was previously "engaged" to Amy Lawrence. Soon after Becky rejects him, he goes to the cemetery at night with Huckleberry Finn and they see Dr. Robinson's murder.

"I wonder what's become of that boy? Tom, you!"

The elderly woman took her glasses off and examined them around the room; she then put them back on and peered underneath them. She could have seen through a pair of stove-lids just as well, but she seldom or never peered through them for someone as little as a boy; they were her state pair, the pride of her heart, and were made for "style," not use. After a brief period of confusion, she spoke softly but loudly enough for the furniture to hear, saying, "Well, I lay if I get hold of you I'll—"

She didn't finish since, at this point, she was leaning down and using the broom to hit beneath the bed; thus, she required oxygen to break up the blows. All she brought back to life was the cat.

"I never did see the beat of that boy!"
