Edgar Allan Poe originally published his short tale "The Cask of Amontillado" (often transcribed "The Casque..") in the November 1846 edition of "Godey's Lady's Book."
It takes place in an unnamed Italian city in an undisclosed year (maybe the seventeenth century) and tells the story of the narrator's retribution on a buddy who he believes has humiliated him. The story concentrates upon the prospect of someone being buried alive or imprisoned in a tight place with no way out, similar to a number of Poe tales and the 19th-century interest with the topic (called immurement).
