Eddie and his pals are merely young children approaching puberty in 1986. They ride their bikes around their quiet English village throughout the day, searching for any glimmer of excitement. The miniature chalk stick images they leave for one another as messages only they can decipher are known as the "chalk men," and they represent their secret code. Everything changes after that when they follow an enigmatic chalk guy to a mutilated corpse.
Eddie is an adult in 2016 and believes he has moved on from his past. Afterwards, however, he receives a letter in the mail with a single chalk stick figure in it. His buddies believe it may be a hoax when they discover they received the same message—that is, until one of them comes up dead.
Eddie then understands that in order to save himself, he has at last discover the truth about what really happened all those years ago.
