Three distinct women find that midlife transitions provide a whole new kind of empowerment in the Long Island beach town of Mattauk.

Nessa James finds herself living alone in a modest white cottage close to the seashore after the death of her husband and the departure of her twin children for college. The retired nurse starts hearing voices in her late forties. Nessa quickly learns that the voices she hears are those of the deceased; this is a gift from her grandmother that carries with it unique obligations.

Harriett Osborne, a dapper advertising director approaching fifty, has just seen her successful career and marriage collapse. She looks like she and her garden have gone to seed from the outside, and she hasn't left her home in months. However, Harriett's life has taken a remarkable and much-needed turn for the better.

Jo Levison, a former executive with ambition, has been at battle with her body for thirty long years. The hot flashes and wrath that come with the onset of menopause seem like the last straw, but then she discovers she can control them and can finally take control of her life.

The three ladies find a young girl whose corpse was left next to a secluded beach, led by voices that only Nessa can hear. The victim has been dismissed by the police as a drug-addled prostitute, but the ladies don't accept the official story. Their search for answers about the girl's murder turns to additional dead as well as information about the most exclusive and remote community in the town—a place of incredible luxury where morality is nonexistent. Jo, Nessa, and Harriett will take things into their own hands using their newly acquired abilities.
