Earth is in disarray in The Dark Forest after learning of an impending extraterrestrial invasion that will occur four centuries from now. The human allies of the aliens have been vanquished, but Earth's defence strategies remain vulnerable due to the existence of sophons—subatomic particles that provide Trisolaris rapid access to all human data. The human intellect alone is yet unknown.

This is the driving force behind the audacious Wallfacer Project, which gives four individuals access to vast resources so they may create covert plans that are kept a secret from both Earth and Trisolaris by trickery and deception. While the fourth Wallfacer is completely unknown, the other three are well-known scientists and leaders. The unassuming Chinese sociologist and astronomer Luo Ji is perplexed by his newfound prominence. All he knows is that Trisolaris wants him dead—the only Wallfacer.
