In this bold, completely engrossing story of calamity and survival at the end of the world, written by the famed author of The Chalk Man, three regular people risk everything for a chance at redemption.

When Hannah wakes up, the scene is one of broken glass and twisted metal. Her coach crashed over a hillside road during one of the worst snowstorms of the year during a hurried escape from a remote boarding school, leaving her inside with a small group of survivors, a growing illness, and no way to contact for aid. She and the other few must cooperate with one another or risk being buried alive with the dead if they hope to escape this ordeal unscathed, along with their sanity and secrets.

Meg, a former investigator, wakes up to soft rocking. She has no memory of how they got there, but she finds herself in a cable car hung high above a snowstorm, surrounded by individuals wearing similar uniforms. They are traveling to an enigmatic location they can only refer to as "The Retreat," but Meg senses something far more sinister is afoot when she spots a familiar face among their ranks and they find a dead guy.

Carter is staring out the window of the deserted ski lodge that he shares with his motley crew of other countrymen. Together, they eke out an unstable existence by exchanging necessities of life for vaccines against a fatal infection. Their shaky relationships will be put to the test when the power eventually goes out—for good—as their generator starts to falter and the possibility of something lurking in the chalet's depths grows more real.

Hannah, Meg, and Carter's impending perils are only one piece of the jigsaw. A bigger menace lurks in their shadows, one that has the potential to wipe out all of humanity.
