The Bear and the Nightingale, Katherine Arden’s enchanting first novel, introduced readers to an irresistible heroine. Vasilisa grew raised on the edge of a Russian forest, where the fairy tales recounted over the fire have real meaning and snowdrifts reach the eaves of her family's wooden home. Morozko, the winter demon from the legends, saw Vasilisa's talent for seeing what others do not, and the two of them prevented her people from being destroyed. However, Frost's assistance comes with a price: her people have declared her to be a witch.

Vasilisa in The Girl in the Tower must make a difficult decision. She is forced to choose between marriage and the convent after being driven from her home by terrified villagers. Reluctant to accept either outcome, she opts for adventure by disguising herself as a boy and embarking on a journey on her gorgeous horse, Solovey.

However, all changes when she wins a battle with bandits. She is reunited with her loving sister and brother, who are now a member of the Grand Prince's inner circle, after the Grand Prince of Moscow crowns her a hero for her achievements. She dares not reveal to the court that she is a girl, for if her deception were discovered it would have terrible consequences for herself and her family. Before she can free herself from Moscow's deceit and while Frost offers advice that may or may not be reliable, she will have to deal with a more serious danger that threatens Moscow as a whole.
